GOOD MORNING from NEW ORLEANS … We flew down here yesterday to check out VP MIKE PENCE fundraising with HOUSE MAJORITY WHIP STEVE SCALISE at a private event at the World War II Museum. We wanted to catch the vibe of the GOP fundraising circuit with two of the party’s top names, and see what Republicans were talking about as a maelstrom swirls at the White House.THEY WERE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE DRAMA. At all. Not one iota. (By the way, Pence’s remarks were pooled, there was media in the room and he said nothing about “fake news.” He didn’t criticize the media once.) DESPITE the constant drama in D.C. -- especially at the White House -- Scalise and Pence were a draw. They raised $1.4 MILLION for the Great America Committee -- Pence’s PAC -- and Scalise’s victory committee. It was a relatively small event -- just 14 tables of eight or so chairs each arranged under a bunch of antique military planes suspended from the ceiling.SCALISE and PENCE … [Read more...] about POLITICO Playbook: Pence on the trail

TICK … TOCK … The split-screen guilty verdict of PAUL MANAFORT and MICHAEL COHEN’s plea is, perhaps, the best evidence that ROBERT MUELLER is treating this investigation like an old-school organized crime probe. While PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP turns on the noise machine every day -- shouting about what he sees as bias -- Mueller is using the criminal-justice system to take out the people closest to the president. DESPITE THE HUM OF every self-proclaimed expert crowing about what Mueller is up to, none of us have a damn clue what’s next. We don’t know when this is going to wrap up -- won’t be Sept. 1, Rudy! -- how Republicans will handle it, how Democrats will react, how the president will react or how it will impact the midterm elections. We don’t know if this will stretch past Election Day, or who else Mueller is going after.IMPEACHMENT, of course, is top of mind for everyone in the White House and on the Hill. But without knowing the full gamut … [Read more...] about POLITICO Playbook: GOP frets as Trump world implodes
AN OMAROSA OBSERVATION … THIS IS the second time PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has been entangled with a woman who is equally adept at playing the media. First it was Stormy Daniels. Now it seems like Omarosa has gotten in Trump’s head. OMAROSA IS someone who has known the president for years, and she has gone rogue. She’s publicly said she has betrayed Trump and the White House in the worst way -- by surreptitiously recording what seems to be hours of private conversations that she might or might not release depending how events unfold. Oh, and by the way, she said on “Hardball” last night that she’d be glad to pass the tapes over to Robert Mueller should he ask. SHE IS MAKING it clear that she is in control -- not Trump and the White House. Buying her silence didn't work. John Kelly’s suggestion she go quietly obviously fell flat. The president’s brand is savvy and strength, and Omarosa is putting him back on his heels. In that, Trump risks … [Read more...] about POLITICO Playbook: Omarosa puts Trump on his heels
By NATHANIEL RICH AUG. 1, 2018 We knew everything we needed to know, and nothing stood in our way. Nothing, that is, except ourselves. A tragedy in two acts. Losing Earth Prologue Part One Part Two Epilogue Thirty years ago, we had a chance to save the planet. The science of climate change was settled. Almost nothing stood in our way — except ourselves. We knew everything we needed to know, and nothing stood in our way. Nothing, that is, except ourselves. A tragedy in two acts. By Nathaniel Rich AUG. 1, 2018 Editor’s Note This narrative by Nathaniel Rich is a work of history, addressing the 10-year period from 1979 to 1989: the decisive decade when humankind first came to a broad understanding of the causes and dangers of climate change. Complementing the text is a series of aerial photographs and videos, all shot over the past year by George Steinmetz. With support from the Pulitzer Center, this two-part article is … [Read more...] about Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change
BILL CRAWFORD “Hatred is blind and anger deaf” wrote Alexandre Dumas in his classic “The Count of Monte Cristo.” In February, WalletHub.com ranked Mississippi as the 5th angriest and most hateful state behind Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Alaska. And the Clarion-Ledger reported “Mississippi has the third most hate groups in the country” per capita behind Idaho and Tennessee. This comes amidst reports of increases in hate and hate crimes across America. “Hate in America is on the rise” headlined a Washington Post editorial last November. “A new FBI report on hate crimes tells a sobering story. For the second year in a row, police departments across the country reported a rise in the number of crimes motivated by bias.” Former President George W. Bush slammed Russia for using cyberattacks during the 2016 elections to turn “Americans against each other” and “exploit our … [Read more...] about BILL CRAWFORD — Mississippi morality yielding to anger and hatred?
