PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — A Cambodian court announced Monday that the trial on treason charges of opposition leader Kem Sokha will begin next month, more than two years after he was arrested. The Phnom Penh Municipal Court said in a statement that the trial of Kem Sokha, president of the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party, will start Jan. 15. Kem Sokha was arrested in September 2017 and charged with treason for having links to a U.S.-based democracy promotion organization. He could be imprisoned for up to 30 years if found guilty. His party was dissolved by court order in November 2017 in what was widely seen as a political maneuver by the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen to ensure that his ruling Cambodian People’s Party would face no serious opposition in the 2018 general election. At the same time, there was a crackdown on media to silence critical voices. Hun Sen’s party won all the seats in the National Assembly, but drew condemnation from human rights … [Read more...] about Treason trial scheduled for opposition party chief in Cambodia
SACRAMENTO — A movement to abolish prisons run by private companies has grown over the past decade from a fringe position to a rallying cry for liberal presidential candidates — and now, California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Activists argue that corporations motivated by profit have a perverse incentive to support policies leading to more prison time for more people and to skimp on the services they provide to inmates. Newsom joined those critics last year when he declared on hiscampaign website that for-profit prisons “contribute to over-incarceration.” In his January inaugural address, he promised to “end the outrage that is private prisons in the state of California once and for all.” Unlike his pledges to build more housing or establish a single-payer health care system, Newsom has the direct authority to make this campaign goal a reality — by moving about 3,700 inmates out of four private prisons in California and one in Arizona. But to fulfill … [Read more...] about Gavin Newsom promised to empty California’s private prisons. Can he do it?
1997-08-01 04:00:00 PDT Sacramento -- One of the country's largest firms that privately builds and runs prisons announced plans yesterday for a new, 2,000-bed facility in the Mojave Desert, with no guarantee that the state will send convicts to the lockup. But David Myers, president of the Corrections Corporation of America, expressed confidence that the facility will not lack occupants, because California prisons already are bulging with 152,000 convicts -- nearly double their designed capacity. "They'll avail themselves of it," drawled Myers, a former warden in Texas. Myers, officials from California City (population 8,000) and state Senator Richard Polanco, D-Los Angeles, held a Capitol news conference to announce the plan to open the $80 million to $100 million prison within two years. "If we build it, they will come," predicted Polanco, chairman of the Joint Committee on Prison Construction and Operations, and a supporter of the private effort. "Recidivism is high, and … [Read more...] about SACRAMENTO — Privately Run Prison Planned for Mojave / Firm says it can house inmates cheaper
Of all of the articles I have written on the Patch concerning Wildlife Management and Disease, this one is the most important! We have many roaming dogs here in Walton County and here in Georgia. These dogs that roam the woodlands and pastures have a 100% chance of encountering a Coyote or Fox on their travels. All Pet owners know that dogs will eat the scat of other animals as well as roll in the scat. What I want you to understand that there is a disease fatal to humans that is not being reported by the media or the DNR that involves your Pets. It is called Echinococcus multilocularis or Hydatid Tapeworm disease. Your veterinarian can give your dog a pill to prevent him from getting the disease but here is something the government is not telling you. Coyotes and Foxes are a Vector or definitive host for this deadly disease.http://www.liverdoctor.com/liver-problems/hydatid-cysts-of-the-liver/ I do alot of research on Coyotes and understand their behavior better than most since I have … [Read more...] about “A Coyote Disease Worst Than Rabies”
