Police Believe Shooting During Funeral At Friends Cemetery In Upper Darby Was Retaliatory

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) — A shooting at a Delaware County cemetery has left one person injured. Police are now trying to confirm if the incident is in retaliation for a shooting that, they say, happened in Philadelphia just days ago. Chopper 3 showed the aftermath of what was a frenetic burial for a recent gunshot victim at the Friends Southwestern Burial Ground. READ MORE: WATCH LIVE: Philadelphia Officials To Provide COVID-19 Vaccination Program Update Police say two suspects on foot started shooting into the mourners, striking two people that they know of around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, sending one to surgery. An investigation into whether the shooting is retaliatory is active. “The investigation is open, but the funeral here today was from a shooting victim in the city from a few days ago and there was a shooting here today because of it,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said. St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church sits just across the street. Father Gregory Gilbert has seen his share of violence at this cemetery. He says there was a shooting just a month ago in front of the church and has been begging the cemetery for over two years to have a police presence for the funerals of gunshot victims. READ MORE: Sixers' Matisse Thybulle Receives Special Birthday Mural In Fishtown “This is 100% predictable because of the refusal of the people operating the cemetery to have large funerals and especially funerals for shooting victims monitored by the police,” Gilbert said. During the scramble to get out of the cemetery, two cars were involved in a minor accident as well. Police say there is only one exit out of the cemetery and they’re confident security cameras will reveal the two suspects who fled on foot from the shooting. “We are working with the cemetery and the director here to make sure that we’re notified that there is a burial so if that there is a large crowd — and mainly because of the traffic here in this street, to be ...

Congress in lockdown: Will we just ‘get used to it’?

When I first came to Washington in 1995 as a CBS News correspondent, the U.S. Capitol building was truly “The People’s House.” Anybody could walk in and browse around, walk the historic marble floors, look at the historic statues. No metal detectors. No police or security guards removing perfume from your purse in case it’s a plot to build an explosive device from liquid. The same sort of access was available to the public and press at most federal buildings at the time. Even the White House, more secure than the other buildings back then, was less like a command bunker. Anybody could drive right along the public street adjacent to the back of the White House and take a look. ADVERTISEMENT Of course everything, understandably, changed with the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Most any building occupied by the federal government became a fortress. Concrete barriers were erected all over the city to make it harder for a car bomber to drive into a building. Police are routinely stationed on streets, at places they rarely were seen before. Metal detectors, police and security guards, sweeps with mirrors under your car as you enter a parking garage, all became the norm. A complete web of rules and restrictions was adopted, dictating who could enter what building and when. It involved various combinations of: Call ahead. Get clearance. Submit your Social Security number. Show your driver’s license. Have an escort. And that street by the White House was closed to ordinary vehicle traffic. It’s been treated to an expanding array of fencing, guard shacks and Secret Service presence. Shortly after 9/11, many of us wondered if the changes to our nation’s capital would be permanent — and hoped it would not have to be. Since then, security measures have expanded further. And with each new restriction, there’s opportunity for abuse. Federal officials sometimes use supposed security concerns as an excuse to control access and information; the public becomes further ...

The Senate voted 50-50 to proceed to the relief legislation, with Vice President Harris breaking a tie to advance the bill ( The Hill ). Momentum slowed on Thursday as senators awaited a required assessment from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to ensure rules are being followed to permit the majority to bypass a 60-vote filibuster. The Senate's version of the coronavirus bill strips out House-passed language that would have increased the minimum wage to $15 per hour. It also provides less generous income allowances for those who would receive $1,400 direct payments from the government. A Senate Democratic aide said on Thursday that the bill also includes $510 million for Federal Emergency Management Agency homeless shelter providers, increases the total amount of Amtrak relief funding by $200 million and ...
