Keep it orderly, please. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Photo: Angus Mordant/Bloomberg via Getty Images Addressing a gathering of municipal movers and shakers at the Crain’s Power Breakfast, Commissioner Keechant Sewell recently floated the idea of improving police-community relations by focusing on the first impressions formed when citizens encounter the NYPD. “It’s the first 15 seconds, the first 15 feet, the first 15 minutes of your interaction with the police department that really determines how you feel about how you were treated and how the police department is functioning,” she told the gathering. It’s a great idea, but for traffic safety advocates, the commissioner’s words sounded like a bitter joke. Every day, cops illegally park their personal vehicles on sidewalks, in crosswalks, at bus stops, and in bike lanes, turning the streets and sidewalks around every police precinct into a trash-strewn obstacle course (sanitation sweepers can’t clean gutters blocked … [Read more...] about NYPD’s Illegal Parking Needs to Be Curbed

Letters: Banning abortion pills — Wyoming endangers essential medical care
Wyoming endangers essential medical care Re: “Governor signs measure banning abortion pills,” March 19 news story Wyoming’s Gov. Mark Gordon has signed the law banning the use of mifepristone and similar drugs for abortions in his state. While ostensibly leaving protections in the law for mifepristone’s use to treat miscarriages, the law establishes an ominous threat of government-controlled oversight of women’s medical care. That makes women second-class citizens and means doctors cannot freely render medical care without possibly violating the law. Because surgical procedures and medication pills for miscarriages are identical treatments to those used for abortions, patients can be denied miscarriage care or have care delayed because doctors and pharmacists fear running afoul of the law. Any law that creates hesitancy for doctors to uphold the standard of care for a patient represents a degradation of that care. One consequence of the law is that women may delay or avoid … [Read more...] about Letters: Banning abortion pills — Wyoming endangers essential medical care
Nashville Shooter Amassed an Arsenal Despite Being Under Doctor’s Care
Nashville school shooter Audrey Elizabeth Hale was being treated for an unspecified emotional disorder before Monday’s massacre at a private Christian school—a medical condition Hale’s parents thought should’ve disqualified Hale from owning weapons at all, police revealed Tuesday. Despite the disorder, cops said Hale, 28, was able to legally build up an arsenal of seven guns that were kept hidden at home—three of which were used to mow down six people at The Covenant School . Hale’s parents felt that Hale “should not own weapons,” Nashville Police Chief John Drake said Tuesday. “As it turned out,” he continued, Hale had “been hiding several weapons within the house.” (According to social media profiles and a family member who spoke to The Daily Beast, Hale, who was transgender, had recently started using he/him pronouns.) Norma and Ronald Hale allegedly told cops they knew their daughter owned a weapon at one point, but they told Hale to sell it because they … [Read more...] about Nashville Shooter Amassed an Arsenal Despite Being Under Doctor’s Care
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper signs Medicaid expansion law giving Democrats legacy-setting victory
close Video Fox News Flash top headlines for March 28 Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper on Monday signed a Medicaid expansion law that was a decade in the making and gives the Democrat a legacy-setting victory, although one significant hurdle remains before coverage can be implemented, thanks to a Republican-backed provision. At an Executive Mansion ceremony attended by hundreds, Cooper celebrated passage of expansion legislation, which he's ardently sought since being first elected governor in 2016. It took Republicans in charge of the General Assembly all this time to come around to the idea and agree to offer coverage to more low-income adults, with federal coffers paying for most of it. North Carolina has been among 11 states who haven’t accepted expansion from the federal government. States with Republican leaders have recently been considering expansion after … [Read more...] about North Carolina Gov. A Sibling Rivalry Divides a Famous Artist’s Legacy
Celia Bertoia’s father — the famous sculptor and not-so-famous musician Harry Bertoia — had been dead 30 years when she asked a psychic how to handle his legacy. The youngest of three children, she had long seemed to be her father’s favorite: a confidante who, as a child, would cut his hair outdoors on their forest-fronting property among the idyllic valleys of Eastern Pennsylvania. But after his death in 1978, she dodged the family business of welding together mountains of metal into behemoth public-art installations and “sounding sculptures” that made music. She became a real-estate agent in Colorado, then the owner of a Montana service that provided timing for road races. When she entered her 50s, Celia decided it was time to help manage the thousands of pieces her father had left. Her mother, Brigitta Valentiner Bertoia, had died in 2007. The next year, Celia consulted the psychic, who, knowing none of the back story, described “beautiful papers with abstract designs” — which … [Read more...] about A Sibling Rivalry Divides a Famous Artist’s Legacy
Adnan Syed’s murder conviction reinstated months after he was freed
Maryland's appeals court reinstated the murder conviction against Adnan Syed on Tuesday, roughly six months after Baltimore prosecutors provided new evidence in the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee. Syed, whose conviction was made famous by the podcast "Serial," was released from prison in October after Baltimore City State Attorney Marilyn Mosby said DNA evidence supported Syed's innocence. Lee's family had filed an appeal , arguing that they were not properly notified of the efforts to release Syed last year. The Maryland appeals court ruled in their favor, stating that officials failed to provide sufficient notice for Lee's family to attend the hearing. A new hearing will be held regarding the evidence to vacate Syed's conviction, but the previous murder charges have been reinstated in the interim. Tuesday's decision and the new hearing are seen as a procedural issue, and there is no reason to believe Syed will be sent back to prison. The prosecutor has indicated that … [Read more...] about Adnan Syed’s murder conviction reinstated months after he was freed
