STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 season on Wednesday morning and could reach the east coast by the end of next week, meteorologists predict. Currently, the storm is located 1,160 miles east/northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, off the coast of Puerto Rico, said Paul Walker, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. "It's certainly a concern for the east coast,'' Walker said, noting that the storm still has a long way to go and is most likely still nine or 10 days away from the Atlantic coast. Predictions do place the storm close enough to guarantee rough seas, and will pester shipping and coastal interests. Whether or not Florence will threaten land will depend on how far west the storm tracks. "It's a long way off,'' Walker said. "We're not talking about it even getting close to Bermuda until Tuesday of next week. A lot can happen, though, so people should be watching it and should be prepared for a storm.'' … [Read more...] about Will Hurricane Florence threaten the east coast?

In a four-week span, hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria ravaged Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. (AP file photo) By Len Melisurgo | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season has gotten off to a sluggish start, with five named storms but no monster hurricanes like the ones that caused widespread destruction last summer. This quiet beginning, however, doesn't mean people living and vacationing along the Jersey Shore, or in other coastal areas of the United States, should get complacent and expect smooth sailing through the rest of this hurricane season. "Some years when it’s really quiet, that’s when we get nailed," said meteorologist Dan Kottlowski, a hurricane expert at AccuWeather. "Don't let your guard down. The season lasts until November 30th. So keep your guard up." A roller coaster year Unprecedented events … [Read more...] about Hurricane expert warns coastal residents: ‘Don’t let your guard down’
