Photo: The Strategist; Photo: Laura Fitzelle Instead of paying rent, I use a backpack . I mean, I pay rent too, but it’s $1,000 a month to live with three roommates. In 2019 I tweeted, “Please G*d, Please don’t let me be a 30-year-old with roommates.” I am 30 and a half years old, and I hear sex noises that aren’t my own when I go to sleep at night, and I think about this tweet all of the time. I don’t have my own bathroom. I tell some of the boys I’m seeing that I do, but I do not. I am never honest with the people I am seeing about my living situation. Recently, after I finished seeing a guy who had 3 other girlfriends, I started seeing another guy. This one just had one girlfriend. I thought: must be love. The thing about being a mistress, especially a mistress who lives with three roommates, is that it helps to have all of your belongings with you at all times. This period — my mistressing hour — is when I started my resurgence back into backpack territory. The first … [Read more...] about My Backpacks, My Boyfriends

More fallout from Laguna Honda troubles: Huge S.F. affordable housing project onsite delayed
As far as San Francisco housing projects go, the apartment complex proposed for a Laguna Honda Hospital parking lot seemed to have everything going in its favor. The plan had community support: Neighbors who had helped kill a similar project proposed across the street were not lining up to oppose the more than 250 badly needed affordable homes for seniors that were being planned at the Laguna Honda site. Political leaders, including Mayor London Breed and the local supervisor, also wanted the homes to be built. The city selected a well-known and respected affordable developer, Mercy Housing, to construct the complex, which would bring a mix of independent and assisted senior living units to the same campus as a city-run nursing home. But the project is now delayed due to circumstances unrelated to the proposed apartment complex. City officials and Mercy Housing say they’ve halted work on the project because of Laguna Honda’s ongoing certification problems . Accuser’s Wife: Matt Schlapp Destroyed Our Marriage
Just hours after CNN confirmed The Daily Beast’s report that a former Herschel Walker campaign staffer had accused conservative powerbroker Matt Schlapp of sexually assaulting him, a Schlapp ally was trying to malign the accuser—publicly and privately. In a text message to this reporter just after midnight on Jan. 12, a Republican fundraiser who’s been working for the Schlapps asked what she thought was a damning question about the accuser: “How’s his marriage going?” The fundraiser, Caroline Wren, who has worked for Lindsey Graham , Donald Trump , organizers of the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally , Kari Lake , and Caitlyn Jenner —and who now appears by name in the accuser’s $10 million sexual battery and defamation lawsuit against the Schlapps —likely knew the answer to that question. But the answer may be damning for reasons that Wren did not comprehend. Rather than a point of shame, it may be an indication of the toll that the alleged assault has taken on the … [Read more...] about Accuser’s Wife: Matt Schlapp Destroyed Our Marriage
Oakland’s new prosecutor tests voters’ views of crime and punishment
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 OAKLAND, Calif. - For more than a decade, the district attorney for Alameda County, where this city is the center of gravity, prosecuted crime the old-fashioned way, with stiff sentences and the reliable support of law-enforcement unions at election time. That changed sharply in November. Nancy O'Malley, the incumbent, declined to seek reelection amid the strengthening national push to reexamine who is punished and for how long. In her place, voters chose Pamela Price, a civil rights lawyer, who four years and a pandemic earlier had lost her challenge to O'Malley. Now, a woman who made a living taking on the local justice system is running it. "They elected me with a mandate," Price, the first Black woman to serve as Oakland district attorney, said in an interview. "And, to me, the right prosecutor for the moment is one who is not wedded to the status quo." Price … [Read more...] about Oakland’s new prosecutor tests voters’ views of crime and punishment
In ‘Lord of the Flies’ Remake, Girls Survive Instead
A planned film adaptation of “Lord of the Flies,” the 1954 novel that examined the inherent evil of humanity through an island of boys without adult supervision, will have a provocative twist: This time, the island will be full of girls. The concept alone invited immediate scrutiny on social media. But skepticism was inflamed by a fairly common Hollywood story : The film about girls will be written and directed by two men, Scott McGehee and David Siegel. The two men have reportedly made a deal with Warner Bros. to create the movie. Mr. Siegel told Deadline, which reported the news , that they intended to do “a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book.” Using girls “might help people see the story anew,” Mr. McGehee said. “It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression,” he said. “People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling. It is a great adventure story, real … [Read more...] about In ‘Lord of the Flies’ Remake, Girls Survive Instead
