The 21-year-old Arvada man suspected of killing 10 people inside a Boulder King Soopers used banned large-capacity magazines during the attack, but it does not appear he purchased the magazines illegally, Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said Thursday. One month to the day since the March 22 mass shooting, Dougherty announced prosecutors had filed 43 new charges against the suspected shooter, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, and said a motive for the attack remains unclear. Alissa now faces 54 charges in connection with the attack, including 10 counts of carrying an illegal large-capacity magazine. Investigators found 10 magazines with more than 15-round capacity inside the store and in the vehicle that Alissa drove to the King Soopers on Table Mesa Drive, Dougherty said. Investigators have no indication the magazines were purchased illegally, he said, and declined to elaborate. Magazines with more than 15-round capacity have been banned in Colorado since 2013, but there are ways to get around the law. Some Colorado retailers sell large-capacity magazines as disassembled parts, a kit that the buyer could later assemble into a functioning magazine. “That’s the only way they’re legal,” said Taylor Rhodes, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, the Colorado affiliate of the National Association of Gun Rights. He said many manufacturers will not ship large-capacity magazines to Colorado if a person tries to buy them online. A person could also go to another state, buy the magazines and bring them back to Colorado, but possessing them would be illegal. Large-capacity magazines owned before 2013 were grandfathered in and remain legal in Colorado. “If there was a store or a dealer who sold the magazine illegally, charges could be filed — would be filed — against that store or individual,” Dougherty said. “We don’t have any indication (of that) at this point.” Police have alleged Alissa used a Ruger AR-556 pistol that he ...
