After the excitement of the holidays and before the anticipation of spring break , there is another highly awaited classroom observance that schools all over the country will be celebrating: the 100th day of school. The 100th day is an important milestone because it means students are more than halfway through the year, as most schools have 180 days in their calendar year. It is also a great occasion to highlight how much children have learned since their academic year began. Marking the 100th day is particularly popular in kindergarten to second-grade classrooms because teachers are still heavily focused on reinforcing basic math skills and numbers. "When we start the school year, I talk to the kids about celebrating 100 days, and they really can't grasp how many days that is," says teacher Sara Garcia of St. John Paul II Catholic School in Houston. "In my classroom, we count the days, and when the kids return from their holiday break in January, the excitement begins because … [Read more...] about Academic milestone ‘100 days of school’ explained in Texas

San Francisco police seek man who fired ‘possible blanks’ in synagogue
A man stepped inside a Jewish synagogue in San Francisco on Wednesday night and made a statement before pulling out a handgun and firing off "possible blanks," officials said Friday morning. The description of the man in this incident is similar to the one of a man who reportedly brandished a gun at a local theater Tuesday night, the San Francisco Police Department said in a news release. "Based on these recent reports, which appear to be unrelated, the subject’s description is similar and is possibly the same individual," police said. "Officers are searching for this subject." Police said a man entered the Schneerson Center at 2655 Balboa St. at about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday when a group was gathered. After firing several shots, he fled the synagogue, police said. Police were called the next morning about the incident, and just before 9:30 a.m., officers visited the synagogue, where they found "expended casings that were fired, which are being investigated as possible … [Read more...] about San Francisco police seek man who fired ‘possible blanks’ in synagogue
A Return to Nordic Roots
MINNEAPOLIS THERE’S no escaping Scandinavian heritage in the Twin Cities. At every turn, there’s a billboard for Norwegian language-immersion camp or a “Drool if You’re Finnish” baby bib for sale. But in food terms, it’s long been easier to get an authentic taco al pastor, Thai green curry or a grass-fed beef slider than a good kanel snegl (cinnamon roll). There hasn’t been a successful Scandinavian restaurant here since 2003, when Aquavit, a slick expense-account-fueled import from Midtown Manhattan, closed after a lackluster run. “When I was growing up, if we wanted to have meatballs and lingonberries, we had to go to Ikea,” said Kathryn Anderson, a student at the University of Minnesota. “That’s how bad it was.” There are plenty of good restaurants in the Twin Cities: at least one great Mexican tamale joint (La Loma), several Vietnamese pho specialists and storefronts that cater to the cities’ large Somali and Hmong communities. Several upscale places, like Tilia, Heartland … [Read more...] about A Return to Nordic Roots
Legal recreational pot sales begin for Missouri adults
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 7 COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Recreational marijuana sales in Missouri officially began Friday after the state health department unexpectedly began approving dispensary permits early. Medical marijuana has been legal in the state since a ballot measure passed in 2018, but voters went a step further this November by approving a constitutional amendment legalizing the drug for anyone 21 or older. The new law made Missouri the 21st state to allow recreational use. Under the amendment, non-medicinal pot use became legal in the state in December. But sales were stalled because the health department had until Friday to issue business licenses. Almost all of the state's medical marijuana dispensaries applied to sell recreational pot, according to Lisa Cox, spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Senior Services. Of the medical marijuana facilities that applied to … [Read more...] about Legal recreational pot sales begin for Missouri adults
Paris bar from World’s 50 Best list to pop up in San Francisco
For as many great bars as there are in San Francisco, the city is missing one component: a top-50 best bar in the world. A San Francisco cocktail bar might not have made the most recent version of the prestigious list by 50 Best, but they have in the past; for example, Trick Dog was on it in 2019. Every year, a panel of nearly 1,000 restaurant and bar experts vote in the best bars from around the world. For one night only on Feb. 7, San Franciscans can experience Little Red Door, the No. 5 best bar in the world, as it makes its debut appearance all the way from the Marais district of Paris, according to Eater SF . Little Red Door has annually graced the top 50 for the past decade. Known for its “farm to glass” method of drinks, which it started in 2020, this cocktail haven incorporates seasonal ingredients, similar to what one might find on a farm-to-table dinner menu. Think concoctions made with rice, carrots or nuts. View this post on Instagram … [Read more...] about Paris bar from World’s 50 Best list to pop up in San Francisco
NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity is transforming pit crews with college and pro athletes
When Tyriq McCord joined NASCAR as a pit crew member a little more than three years ago, his knowledge of what made a car go fast stopped and started with the gas pedal. “I didn’t even know how to change the tire on my car,” he said. But he could bench-press 225 pounds and run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds and those were the kinds of skills Phil Horton was looking for. Advertisement A former athletic trainer in college football and with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, as the pit crew coach for stock-car racing’s Drive for Diversity development program Horton has recruited more than 100 former college and professional athletes, from lacrosse players to linebackers, to work as tire changers, tire carriers, jackmen — and women — and gasmen for teams in all three of NASCAR’s top three nationwide series. And while that has undoubtedly made NASCAR more diverse, it’s also made pit crews better and faster, which can mean millions of dollars in a sport where the average margin of … [Read more...] about NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity is transforming pit crews with college and pro athletes
