As children are out of school for the summer holidays, concerns have grown over the possibility of children being sent abroad and placed into forced marriages as tens of thousands of children in Sweden risk being married against their will. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that as many as 70,000 children and young people were at risk of forced marriages in Sweden, a figure that is believed to be even higher today, though exact numbers are hard to gauge as forced marriages are illegal in Sweden and are often performed overseas. In the municipality of Botkyrka in Stockholm, around one in four girls in school year nine, aged between 15 and 16, say they are not allowed to choose who they want to marry, while one in three say that they live with “virginity requirements” for marriage, SVT reports . Last year, SVT reported an increase in young women and girls who were being taken from Sweden overseas to be married, stating that girls as young as 15 were being taken to countries … [Read more...] about Concern That Child and Forced Marriages to Rise Over Summer Holidays

Gov Logs 1,200 Forced Marriage Cases in One Year, But ‘Not Full Scale’ Shown
Nearly 1,200 forced marriage cases were logged by the government’s Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) last year, new data shows, with the body saying the number “may not reflect the full scale of the abuse.” Of the 1,196 cases flagged 2017, more than one in four victims were younger than 18-years-old, and one in five were males, the FMU said in a report. The document reveals that that, since 2012, the unit has logged between 1,200 and 1,400 cases each year, involving more than 90 foreign countries. In 2016, the FMU recorded over 1,400 victims, up from 1,200 in 2015, as reported by Breitbart London. A massive 439 of the marriages in 2017 either took place or were due to take place in Pakistan, followed by Bangladesh with 129 reports, and 91 in Somalia. The list continues with India, Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Romania, and Saudi Arabia. Despite the vast majority forced marriages taking part in Islamic states or predominantly Muslim countries, the report “does not provide a … [Read more...] about Gov Logs 1,200 Forced Marriage Cases in One Year, But ‘Not Full Scale’ Shown
Girls Fearing Forced Marriage Told to Stick a Spoon in Underwear
Girls in Sweden are being advised that if they fear being taken overseas to be subjected to a forced marriage or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that they should hide a spoon in their underwear. “The spoon will trigger metal detectors when you go through security checks,” said Katarina Idegård who is the development manager for the unit charged with tackling honour-based violence in Sweden’s second biggest city Gothenburg. “You will be taken aside and you can then talk to staff in private,” Ms. Idegård told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “It is a last chance to sound the alarm,” she added. Airport staff in Gothenburg have been trained on how to handle such situations, and campaigners hope other cities and airports will adopt the same procedure. Reuters reports that Sweden keeps no statistics on the number of girls who are sent abroad to be forced into marriages, but Ms. Idegård said a hotline has received 139 calls last year about forced and child marriages. The U.S. Supreme Court Could Take Aim At A Landmark Decision Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Like most couples in love, Jim Obergefell and his partner, John Arthur, always dreamt of getting married. “We wanted to get married,” Obergefell said. “We just never thought we would have that ability because it wasn’t the possibility in the mid-nineties anywhere.” READ MORE: Fear And Frustration: 18 People Shot In Baltimore Last Weekend, Including Two Fells Point Shootings As time went on, and views on same-sex marriage changed, so did the laws. In July of 2013 Jim and John, who was battling ALS, boarded a plane for Maryland to be married. “We wanted to make our promises to each other public and legal,” Obergefell said. “We believed we had that right.” Upon returning to their home state of Ohio, they learned that when Arthur passed away, an unavoidable outcome due to his ALS diagnosis, his death certificate would say unmarried, as Ohio didn’t recognize same-sex marriages. So the couple sued the state of Ohio and took the case all the way to … [Read more...] about The U.S. Supreme Court Could Take Aim At A Landmark Decision Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

Inflation Hits New 40-Year High As Price Increases Spread
16 Business Report underscores fears inflation has spread beyond energy and goods, whose prices are driven up by supply chain issues and Ukraine war. Associated Press , News Partner Posted Replies WASHINGTON — The prices of gas, food and most other goods and services jumped in May, raising inflation to a new four-decade high and giving American households no respite from rising costs. Consumer prices surged 8.6 percent last month from a year earlier, faster than April's year-over-year increase of 8.3 percent, the Labor Department said Friday. The new inflation figure, the highest since 1981, will heighten pressure on the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates aggressively. On a month-to-month basis, prices jumped 1 percent from April to May, much faster than the 0.3 percent increase from March to April. Contributing to that surge were much higher prices for everything from airline tickets to restaurant meals to new and … [Read more...] about Inflation Hits New 40-Year High As Price Increases Spread
