Moviegoers at the Violet Crown Theater in Dallas had the chance to see the film, Monica , for free this weekend, thanks to Hollywood actress Sarah Paulson. In an Instagram post on Friday, theater reps announced that Paulson bought every ticket to the Sunday showtimes of the movie, which stars and tells the story of a transgender woman. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Violet Crown Dallas (@violetcrowndallas) Paulson, of American Horror Story fame, had heard the theater would be the only one to offer screenings of the movie in Dallas and reached out to distributor IFC Films to sponsor them, Violet Crown Cinema spokesperson David Gil told The Dallas Morning News' Tommy Cummings. The actress was not in attendance at any of the showings. According to Cummings, Paulson is not associated with the film's production but is a prominent LGBTQ+ advocate. The Rockets player who would most benefit from James Harden’s return
Like it or not, James Harden returning to Houston this summer looks like an increasingly likely proposition with less than six weeks remaining until free agency. As such a seismic move is weighed by both the 10-time All-Star and ex-MVP and his former (and maybe future) franchise, the debate seems to create a dueling faction of Rockets fans. To some, bringing back Harden undercuts exactly what the Rockets have spent the last three years building. On the surface, the critics may have a point. Harden will turn 34 in August. He could command a contract lasting four years and paying $200 million, and per Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes , Harden is seeking a team that gives him "the basketball freedom for the star to be himself." For those critical of Harden's fitness, leadership and clutch performance, such freedom is a direct gateway to trouble for an organization. Such a scenario creates a narrative around Harden's persona, one that while popular in uninformed circles, is … [Read more...] about The Rockets player who would most benefit from James Harden’s return
How Housing’s New Players Spiraled Into Banks’ Old Mistakes
When the housing crisis sent the American economy to the brink of disaster in 2008, millions of people lost their homes. The banking system had failed homeowners and their families. New investors soon swept in — mainly private equity firms — promising to do better. But some of these new investors are repeating the mistakes that banks committed throughout the housing crisis, an investigation by The New York Times has found. They are quickly foreclosing on homeowners. They are losing families’ mortgage paperwork, much as the banks did. And many of these practices were enabled by the federal government, which sold tens of thousands of discounted mortgages to private equity investors, while making few demands on how they treated struggling homeowners. The rising importance of private equity in the housing market is one of the most consequential transformations of the post-crisis American financial landscape. A home, after all, is the single largest investment most families will … [Read more...] about How Housing’s New Players Spiraled Into Banks’ Old Mistakes

Trump Is Going to Be on Trial in the Heat of the GOP Primary
Photo: Brian Lawless - PA Images/PA Images via Getty Images On Tuesday, a Manhattan judge set March 25, 2024 as the trial date for Donald Trump’s alleged falsification of business records — meaning that the former president and current GOP front-runner will go on trial in the middle of the 2024 primary. In a virtual court appearance, Trump frowned when Judge Juan Merchan announced the date. There’s lots for him to be upset about. That Monday in March comes just six days after the Florida GOP primary — a huge opportunity to embarrass Governor Ron DeSantis his home state. (DeSantis is expected to announce his nomination tomorrow.) It’s not easy to keep Trump’s legal troubles straight. This is the case in which he was accused of paying porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep their affair quiet, then altering records to hide the matter. He appeared in a Manhattan court last month — amid a media frenzy — where he was formally hit with 34 felony counts of tampering with … [Read more...] about Trump Is Going to Be on Trial in the Heat of the GOP Primary
