Congress Passes $700 Billion ‘Inflation Reduction’ Act

August 12, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The House on Friday passed the $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which, unlike its moniker, would not reduce inflation, and instead spends hundreds of billions of dollars on climate change and Obamacare programs. The House passed the legislation along partisan lines, 220-207. The vote featured no Democrats voting against the bill and no Republicans voting for the bill. This includes Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), a swing district Democrat who voted against the American Rescue Plan and the Build Back Better Act. Breitbart News reported on Thursday that House Republican leadership would whip Republicans against the legislation to ensure that zero Republicans vote for the bill. Since the legislation uses budgetary reconciliation, Republicans cannot stop Democrats from passing the bill; however, one senior House Republican staffer explained that they plan on making Democrats “own” the bill, which includes highlighting the deleterious effects of the bill. The legislation would: … [Read more...] about Congress Passes $700 Billion ‘Inflation Reduction’ Act

Elise Stefanik: House Republicans Will Leave ‘No Stone Unturned’

August 12, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and other top Republicans made it clear this week that they are committed to an immediate investigation into the “weaponization” of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI in targeting former President Donald Trump following the recent raid of his Mar-a-Lago home. During a press conference Friday, Stefanik made it clear that a Republican-led House will “leave no stone unturned” when it comes to President Biden’s “weaponization” of the DOJ and FBI against Trump, whom she identified as President Biden’s most likely 2024 political opponent. “Republicans are committed to immediate oversight, accountability, and a fulsome investigation to provide needed transparency and answers to the American people regarding Joe Biden and his administration’s weaponization of the Department of Justice and FBI against Joe Biden’s political opponents,” Stefanik said. Former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. (Charles Trainor Jr./Miami … [Read more...] about Elise Stefanik: House Republicans Will Leave ‘No Stone Unturned’

S.F. wants to extend hotel homeless shelters, but are residents housed when they leave?

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 San Francisco wants to extend the pandemic-era program used to shelter homeless people in hotels through the end of the year as official face the daunting task of rehousing hundreds of people still living in them. Officials and advocates said the program helped to reduce the number of people living on city streets over the past two years. Advocates protested shutting down sites, wanting to keep filling them as temporary shelters even if permanent housing is uncertain , although some question how effective it’s been in getting people into long-term housing and treatment. The city also now faces millions of dollars in claims for property damage from hotel owners. Since April 2020, the program has sheltered 3,771 people in 25 hotels, according to the homelessness department. Less than half of the people who exited hotels went into permanent housing and few have entered residential … [Read more...] about S.F. wants to extend hotel homeless shelters, but are residents housed when they leave?

Dems near congressional passage of climate, health package

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats pushed their flagship climate change and health care bill toward House passage Friday, placing President Joe Biden on the brink of a back-from-the-dead triumph on his leading domestic goals that the party hopes will energize voters going into November’s elections. The narrowly divided House was poised to approve the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party envisioned early last year. Even so, Democrats were thirsty to declare victory on top-tier goals such as providing Congress’ largest ever investment in curbing carbon emissions, reining in pharmaceutical costs and taxing large companies and show they can wring accomplishments out of a frequently gridlocked Washington that disillusions many voters. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, … [Read more...] about Dems near congressional passage of climate, health package

Inflation Reduction Act may have little impact on inflation

August 12, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) — With inflation raging near its highest level in four decades, the House on Friday gave final approval to President Joe Biden's landmark Inflation Reduction Act. Its title raises a tantalizing question: Will the measure actually tame the price spikes that have inflicted hardships on American households? Economic analyses of the proposal suggest that the answer is likely no — not anytime soon, anyway. The legislation, which the Senate passed earlier this week and now heads to the White House for Biden's signature, won't directly address some of the main drivers of surging prices — from gas and food to rents and restaurant meals. Still, the law could save money for some Americans by lessening the cost of prescription drugs for the elderly, extending health insurance subsidies and reducing energy prices. It would also modestly cut the government's budget deficit, which might slightly lower inflation by the end of this decade. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget … [Read more...] about Inflation Reduction Act may have little impact on inflation

Top-Secret Documents Found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago: Everything We’ve Learned

August 12, 2022 by nymag.com Leave a Comment

Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty Images Less than a week after the FBI searched Donald Trump ’s Mar-a-Lago home, it was revealed that federal agents were investigating potential violations of the Espionage Act and that they’d found multiple top-secret documents. On Friday, the warrant used for the search was unsealed after Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a day earlier that the Justice Department had filed a motion in court to do so. Trump’s attorneys did not object, though they declined to share the warrant themselves after they were provided with a copy and a receipt of seized items following the search on Monday. Meanwhile, Trump railed against the FBI and Justice Department for their actions as did Republicans in Congress. Here’s what we’ve learned so far about the investigation of the former president. The search was related to potential violations of three laws, including the Espionage Act : One of the laws concerns the “concealment, removal or mutilation” … [Read more...] about Top-Secret Documents Found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago: Everything We’ve Learned
