Some may require venturing off the so-called "beaten path," but it's worth it to get a meal that doesn't come from a gas station. This list of the nine best places to eat on a road trip from Houston to Dallas will provide plenty of food for thought when you're mapping out your route. Your Thursday Briefing: Tanks for Ukraine
Tanks for Ukraine Yesterday, Germany and the U.S. pledged to send tanks to Ukraine after weeks of diplomatic maneuvering. The pledges could unlock a wave of additional aid ahead of an expected escalation of fighting in the spring. It could take a year or more for 31 American M1 Abrams tanks to reach the battlefield. But the U.S. promise did clear the way for Germany to commit to sending 14 of its Leopard 2 tanks , which could arrive in several months. The decision by Germany to authorize other nations to transfer their own Leopards prompted officials in Finland, the Netherlands and Spain to say that they would seek to send tanks to Ukraine, or that they were open to doing so. Fighting: The announcements come at a critical juncture. Ukraine said yesterday that its forces had retreated from Soledar , a key town near the eastern city of Bakhmut. Diplomacy: Germany made clear that it would send the Leopards only if the U.S. sent the Abrams. Yesterday, … [Read more...] about Your Thursday Briefing: Tanks for Ukraine

A Lengthy Journey, Nowhere Near Over
THOUGH the chemistry of any happy relationship is hard to define, there are tangible elements behind the success of the diminutive Chinese conductor Xian Zhang at the New York Philharmonic and elsewhere. Her incisive gestures elicit vivid performances from musicians who have seen it all, and her passionate musicality reflects the boundless energy that has propelled her improbable journey from a small town in China to the Philharmonic, where, as associate conductor, she is a rising star. Xian Zhang (pronounced she-YEN jhong), who recently returned from Germany, where she had become the first woman to conduct the Staatskapelle Dresden in its main hall, said in an interview that jet lag takes its toll now that she is getting old. But at 34 she is still a fresh face on the podium, and with an extensive lineup of concerts ahead, more jet lag awaits. On Sunday afternoon Ms. Zhang conducts the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in her professional debut at Carnegie Hall, where she conducted the same … [Read more...] about A Lengthy Journey, Nowhere Near Over
