Country music songwriter Wynn Varble has written hits for some of the industry’s biggest stars, including Garth Brooks, Trace Adkins, Brad Paisley, and Kellie Pickler. Over a long and prolific career, he has penned multiple No.1 hits including Darryl Worley’s 9/11-themed ballad “Have You Forgotten?,” which was a popular smash and a Billboard chart topper in 2013. Varble’s latest single is “ I’m Just Sayin’ ,” an ode to common-sense thinking and plain speaking in the face of the woke tide taking over American culture. Co-written with Mike Loudermilk for rising star Austin Moody, the song articulates in a what people are secretly thinking but are too afraid to say in public. They include culture-war subjects such as crime causing the collapse of major cities, university indoctrination, and the transgender movement’s targeting of children. George Michael Preferred Music to Fame. The Doc He Made Does, Too.
George Michael and David Austin were best friends who met because their mothers were best friends. Austin’s family lived at 67 Redhill Drive in the working class Edgware area of North London, and Michael’s family was at 57. The two wrote songs together and remained close even as one became a global superstar and the other didn’t. Michael was a gifted and determined musical dynamo who became a star at the age of 19, first as a member of the British duo Wham! He won two Grammys in the solo career that followed, and collaborated with some of the greatest stars of the previous generation, including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Elton John. He was a gifted writer, producer, arranger and musician, sometimes playing all the instruments on his songs. And as a singer, he moved fluidly from Motown pop to hard funk to Brazilian bossa nova, with a voice that was sure, expressive and flush with poignancy and drama. Neither Michael nor Austin had significant movie directing … [Read more...] about George Michael Preferred Music to Fame. The Doc He Made Does, Too.
In This Swiss Town, Tina Turner Was a Neighbor, Not a Star
Around the world Tina Turner, who died on Wednesday at 83, was known for her music, her powerful stage presence and her barrier-smashing career. But in the Swiss town where she lived for nearly three decades, she was known for living a low-key life — doing her own shopping, standing in line at the post office and exercising outdoors. In front of the house where the rock star lived with her husband, Erwin Bach, and where on Wednesday night neighbors gathered to light candles and tell stories, a polished bronze sign asks (in English and in German) that visitors not ring the doorbell before noon. After a lifetime in the public eye, Ms. Turner moved to the sleepy town of Küsnacht, Switzerland, with Mr. Bach, a German music executive whom she started dating in the 1980s. In 1995, Mr. Bach got a job running the Swiss offices of EMI Music in Zurich, and the two moved to the Alpine country. They married in 2013, the year she acquired Swiss citizenship and gave up her American passport. … [Read more...] about In This Swiss Town, Tina Turner Was a Neighbor, Not a Star
‘Tina’ Review: A Music Icon Looks Back With Grace
In 2009, Tina Turner gave her final public performance. After which she did something that only a few mega-famous musicians actually succeed at: she retired. With her second husband, the former record company executive Erwin Bach, she took up a life far from both the country of her birth and the bustle of the music industry, in Zurich. But Turner continues to inspire. In 2019 a Broadway musical based on her life , made with her cooperation, became a hit. Her songs, both in partnership with Ike Turner and solo, are staples of classic radio stations. For this documentary, directed by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, she sat down for a stocktaking interview; this film is not just a summing up but a kind of farewell. Turner’s life was a hard and complicated one. In the 1980s and beyond, the telling of that story became a defining part of her subsequent life. She began in music in the late 1950s as a wide-eyed teenager in St. Louis, admiring the R&B bandleader Ike Turner and … [Read more...] about ‘Tina’ Review: A Music Icon Looks Back With Grace
