Concern That Child and Forced Marriages to Rise Over Summer Holidays
As children are out of school for the summer holidays, concerns have grown over the possibility of children being sent abroad and placed into forced marriages as tens of thousands of children in Sweden risk being married against their will. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that as many as 70,000 children and young people were at risk of forced marriages in Sweden, a figure that is believed to be even higher today, though exact numbers are hard to gauge as forced marriages are illegal in Sweden and are often performed overseas. In the municipality of Botkyrka in Stockholm, around one in four girls in school year nine, aged between 15 and 16, say they are not allowed to choose who they want to marry, while one in three say that they live with “virginity requirements” for marriage, SVT reports . Last year, SVT reported an increase in young women and girls who were being taken from Sweden overseas to be married, stating that girls as young as 15 were being taken to countries … [Read more...] about Concern That Child and Forced Marriages to Rise Over Summer Holidays
Girls Fearing Forced Marriage Told to Stick a Spoon in Underwear
Girls in Sweden are being advised that if they fear being taken overseas to be subjected to a forced marriage or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that they should hide a spoon in their underwear. “The spoon will trigger metal detectors when you go through security checks,” said Katarina Idegård who is the development manager for the unit charged with tackling honour-based violence in Sweden’s second biggest city Gothenburg. “You will be taken aside and you can then talk to staff in private,” Ms. Idegård told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “It is a last chance to sound the alarm,” she added. Airport staff in Gothenburg have been trained on how to handle such situations, and campaigners hope other cities and airports will adopt the same procedure. Reuters reports that Sweden keeps no statistics on the number of girls who are sent abroad to be forced into marriages, but Ms. Idegård said a hotline has received 139 calls last year about forced and child marriages. In July of 2013 Jim and John, who was battling ALS, boarded a plane for Maryland to be married. “We wanted to make our promises to each other public and legal,” Obergefell said. “We believed we had that right.” Upon returning to their home state of Ohio, they learned that when Arthur passed away, an unavoidable outcome due to his ALS diagnosis, his death certificate would say unmarried, as Ohio didn’t recognize same-sex marriages. So the couple sued the state of Ohio and took the case all the way to … [Read more...] about The U.S. Supreme Court Could Take Aim At A Landmark Decision Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage
