The good news for football fans: It’s going to be much easier to watch NFL games online this year. The league is finally dropping a requirement that viewers sign in with a cable or satellite subscription, in hopes of expanding its online audience at a time when TV ratings are declining. Though there are restrictions — no free streaming on smart TVs, for instance — the move marks a significant departure for sports. Other major professional leagues still require TV subscriptions for hometown teams. The NFL regular season starts Thursday. “We think people will still want to watch on the biggest screen possible,” said Brian Rolapp, the league’s chief business and media officer. But as more people drop cable or satellite subscriptions — or never sign up in the first place — the NFL needs to be flexible to reach them, Rolapp … [Read more...] about Subscription-free streaming for NFL games

Winning the Big Game means a ton to Cal and Stanford players, coaches and fans. Winning the Big Game decisively and then spending the final minutes of the fourth quarter savoring not only that victory but the realization that the win has put your team in the Rose Bowl … well, former Stanford quarterback Todd Husak vividly and enthusiastically can recall the Cardinal’s 31-13 victory 20 years ago. “There were more exciting and compelling games,” Husak said in a phone interview Tuesday, “but I think that last five minutes and that locker room afterward was as good as it gets — and that’s why guys play college football.” That Husak and his teammates got to celebrate Stanford’s first trip to Pasadena since the 1971 season rates as an unlikely story in and of itself. The Cardinal went 3-8 in 1998 and then opened the 1999 season with a thud, a 69-17 loss at Texas. “We looked at it as we can either learn from it or let it sink … [Read more...] about Big Game Memories: Stanford QB Todd Husak, teammates clinched Rose Bowl bid in ’99

Georgia fans will pull off an awesome move Saturday against South Carolina. Saturday Down South reported the following on Wednesday:When South Carolina and its quarterback, Ryan Hilinski, play in Sanford Stadium on Saturday, the Bulldog faithful plan to raise three fingers at the start of the third quarter to honor Hilinski’s late brother, Tyler, who committed suicide in early 2018. The gesture has been done at Williams-Brice Stadium this season as Hilinski himself often raises three fingers, especially after touchdowns, to honor Tyler’s number when he played at Washington State. The Hilinski family has started an organization, “Hilinski’s Hope,” to raise awareness and end the stigma about mental illness, especially as it relates to student athletes. I love this move from Georgia. Ryan Hilinski has taken the college football world by storm, and it’s about a lot more than just his play on the field. Barstool Sports fans. Photo: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images I never saw Barstool Sports coming. I probably should have. I am the guy who founded Deadspin, after all, and during the years I actively ran the site — now more than a decade in the past — I was ostensibly in charge of figuring out what was coming next on the sports internet; I was the supposed leader of the blog-barbarians at the gate, all those bulls (and we were all bulls) running roughshod over the Traditional Sports Media. In retrospect, if I had been paying closer attention, maybe I could have done something to stop Barstool, or at least to slow them down. But I had no interest in being an online avatar of any sort of movement — that someone created a shirt with this image on it is maybe the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me — and was in fact exhausted by the online celebrity status Deadspin had thrust upon me back then. I didn’t want to be a leader, or a visionary, or a … [Read more...] about What Fresh Hell Is Barstool Sports?
