Subscribe here and send your questions, tips, and complaints here . The New York Times saw arguably its largest public revolt in years last month over its coverage of trans people, which led to internal infighting and management crackdowns . But the genesis of the critiques can be traced back to 2021 when LGBTQ staffers pleaded with management to reform the paper’s trans coverage—pleas that largely fell on deaf ears. Confider has learned of a series of prior incidents in which Times staffers within the paper’s LGBTQ-focused employee resource group, TimesOut, repeatedly tried to highlight to management the implications of its coverage of trans people. However, the group often ran into issues with its sponsor Carolyn Ryan, a managing editor at the Times and its highest-ranking LGBTQ employee in the … [Read more...] about The New York Times’ Trans Coverage Debacle Was Years in the Making

New York City Is the Invisible, Eternal Hero in ‘Morning Sun’
On one level, the wonderful Blair Brown, Edie Falco , and Marin Ireland play grandmother Claudette, daughter Charley, and grand-daughter Tessa in Simon Stephens’ delicately affecting play Morning Sun , produced by Manhattan Theatre Club, which opened Nov. 3 at City Center. But that is a deceptively neat description of what unfolds over around 90 minutes, in which the actors and their characters—they are in their seventies, fifties and thirties, respectively—become unfixed, as they tell the stories of all three women’s lives, jumping around in time as much as between a panoply of humans. Brown, for example, plays Falco ’s eventual, very lovely partner, while Ireland also plays Falco ’s earlier abusive partner. The play can be quite weird to follow; a moving scene between mother and daughter suddenly becomes an intimate scene featuring amorous sweet nothings or menacing threats. To underline how un-literally we should see them, in the program these characters are … [Read more...] about New York City Is the Invisible, Eternal Hero in ‘Morning Sun’
Tiger and Trout get together to build New Jersey golf club
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 VINELAND, N.J. (AP) — Three-time American League MVP Mike Trout always wanted a golf course, and he picked 18-time major champion Tiger Woods to build it for him. Trout, the 10-time All-Star centerfielder for the Los Angeles Angels, and a business partner in New Jersey are building a golf club called “Trout National — The Reserve” not far from where Trout grew up in southern New Jersey. They have hired Woods' architecture firm, TGR Design, to create the 18-hole course, a practice range and short-game area. “I love south Jersey and I love golf, so creating Trout National — The Reserve is a dream come true,” Trout said. "And then to add to that we’ll have a golf course designed by Tiger? It’s just incredible to think that this project has grown to where we’re going to be working with someone many consider the greatest and most influential golfer of all time.” Construction is set … [Read more...] about Tiger and Trout get together to build New Jersey golf club
Is It New York Fashion Week? Or Is It Rihanna Inc.?
Is New York Fashion Week, which officially begins Thursday but actually begins Wednesday (thank you, Tom Ford), a dead duck? Is it a sinking ship, in the soup, up the creek? Is it — gasp! — over? Not “over” in the literal sense, of course. There are more than 130 shows on the schedule. But “over” in the substantive sense. Over as a power player in a global system that puts a premium on showcasing clothes that redefine how women present themselves. Over as we know it. Forget whether or not suits are back; this is the existential question underpinning the fashion season. The debate has been raging all summer, ever since Rodarte and Proenza Schouler decamped to Paris for couture in July, and Thom Browne announced he would move to Paris and show during ready-to-wear, and then Joseph Altuzarra said “me too,” and even Lacoste said it was likewise heading back to its city of birth, and then Narciso Rodriguez canceled his show in favor of individual presentations, and Rag & Bone … [Read more...] about Is It New York Fashion Week?
