Derick Almena, defendant in deadly Ghost Ship fire, pleads guilty, avoiding a second trial
In August 2018, an Alamenda County judge threw out a plea deal saying Almena did not show true remorse for the fire. Under that plea agreement, Almena and Harris were to be sentenced to nine and six years, respectively, in county jail.
