Good blade well made
Obviously, one can spend far more on a knife, but why would you, when a knife this amazing can be bought for less than sixty bucks?!?
I did not buy this on Amazon — in fact it was nearly impossible to find one, when I was looking for it, having read reviews of it on various sites and watched video reviews — but I wanted to leave a review here, so others would know that this knife is AMAZING!!!
CRKT has a good reputation and makes solid products, but this one is just ace. I LOVE IT. I have a range of knives, fixed blades, folders, assisted open, and, like other things I’ve liked, knife purchases have grown to a bit of a collection. I started with knives just for camping, then got the "BUDK" fever and started getting pieces I just really liked and, after disappointments with "cheap" blades, I began to learn more about the world of knives, finally seeking to educate myself on production knives versus custom knives and what is "worth" buying. I was amazed to know how much can be spent on a knife! But, I was amazed too by how much more you can get, by spending more, in terms of quality and beauty. However, with budget concerns a reality, I was most interested in finding affordable gems, and this is one of the BEST of such buys, at least in my humble (and somewhat novice) opinion.
In many ways, this kind of mirrored my watch buying experience, starting with just stuff I liked, and then getting educated over the years on what the top range is, what the bottom range is, and what’s in the middle some place where you can get elements of the quality that people pay a lot for, without spending a fortune for it.
What’s good to have? Well, like most things, the "perfect" knife is very personal, but some basics apply in terms of quality build, quality materials, fit and finish, form and function, etc. With this buy, I was looking for a slightly larger EDC (every day carry) knife that would have reliable assisted opening, a quality blade, comfortable grip, and to me the esthetics of a knife is very important — it has to look as great as it works, if at all possible, especially as an EDC.
So, like I say, I read and watched reviews of this knife, and fell in love with it. Took me a while to find it (Amazon wasn’t even selling it back then, having sold out) but I finally did, ordered it up, and it’s been my EDC since the day it arrived. CRKT states that they put all of their best thinking into this one, and it shows!
It is large, for some, but the slim design gives the advantage of having a larger blade area, but in a folding design. To me, it’s the best of both worlds, larger than most folders, yet, as a folder, it fits easily in the pocket, giving you basically the ability to carry something with the power, size and versatility of a small stature fixed blade, without taking up any more room than the average folder.
This "fixed blade in your pocket" design really shines in the locking mechanism. While some say it is not simple to open, familiarity with the "press and push outward" thumb stud shoots this out like a rocket, and it fixes in place solid as stone. With an additional simple slide of the locking mechanism, it can’t be closed without releasing the lock, meaning you can really romp on it for use without any worry of accidental closure. It easily closes one-handed, which is ultra convenient, and obviously opens with one hand. In recent months, I’ve even begun working on the left hand open, which is a new learning curve, but getting easier now, making it an ambidextrous one-hand opener.
When open, and even more so when opened and locked, it seriously is as solid as a full tang fixed blade — it feels that good in the hand. It has exceptional balance and enough handle area to get the grip you want, for any task. The grip itself is very sure and the added jimping along and before the blade makes for precise use of both the blade and spear point tip.
One aspect I truly love is that the shape, design and placement of the pocket clip all actually add to the grip of the knife, in the hand. On many knives, I’ve even removed a pocket clip simply because it seems placed as an afterthought, and ruins the grip of the knife, but CRKT has made this clip part and parcel of what keeps the knife securely in your hand.
Added also are the contours for the grip (finger choils, is the proper term I think), which are actually more subtle than the design would impart, since they look more pronounced because of the contrasted design element of the aluminum scales against the G10 inlays. They are actually just evident enough to give a strong and comfortable grip, but not overly prominent to the degree that it forces your hand into any particular position, or limits grip options. This knife is all about versatility, which is what makes it such a great EDC.
The blade? Unbelievably sharp, right out of the box. I’ve read of blades sharp enough to shave hair off the arm, but this one actually could do just that, so, literally, it it razor sharp. It’s easy to keep an edge on it, and it slices and punctures with ease. Although some might eschew what seems a spear point design, it has enough of almost a drop point mix to it that it really is a unique blade, providing both the power for puncture, but also plenty of "belly" (cutting edge) for cutting tasks. Again, versatility, and, again such is what makes it ideal for every day carry.
And, let’s talk about the looks! It is just perfectly wicked yet beautifully elegant at the same time. The beauty absolutely matches the functionality, so it looks as great as it works and has a "custom" look simply because it is a unique design. Many knives ten times this price don’t have this much appeal, at least for what I was looking for in terms of a design that is tactical without an overly militant look to it. As a larger knife, it doesn’t seem like you’re trying to be Rambo or something, which makes it a friendly knife for pulling out, shooting open, and using, without making people worry — a fact that, sadly, is a consideration these days.
It’s actually a knife I have gotten tons of compliments on, which is never something I expected with my EDC, but it really does impress, especially with the lightening quick opening, combined with the beauty of design.
I think this is just the best knife ever, as you can probably tell, ahahaha, but really, I have never been so pleased with a knife purchase, not even on much more expensive knives, maybe with the exception of my Fallkniven S1, which is another top favorite, as a fixed blade.
Plus, going over a year on now, of daily carry and constant use, it looks as good as the day it arrived, so it’s clear to me that it has been built to last, with quality throughout every aspect of its build.
In summary, even if you wanted to spend more, to feel like you got something great, I just don’t see any other knife out there like this — it is utterly one of a kind in so many aspects, both in form, and function, and it’s just a one of a kind knife that is certainly worth owning, even just to add to your range of knives, if not as an EDC. I’m actually planning to buy a second one, just to have as a back up, in case for any reason I would ever lose the one I have, since I haven’t seen anything else, frankly at any price, that compares to this amazing Fire Spark model.
I give this the HIGHEST recommendation possible!de makes for precise use of both the blade and spear point tip.

I give this the HIGHEST recommendation possible!
Great knife. I probably won’t buy another knife unless it’s a CRKT. I bought three this week. The other two are CRKT M16s. An A13Z and a 14D. I only gave this one 4 stars because I think the thumb stud could be a bit larger to relieve the pressure needed to open the knife. Other than that, it’s a very well made knife. The LAWKS feature is nice too, but it has to be activated manually, unlike my other two which have AUTOLAWKS. The other two are flipper designs, but deploy faster in spite of not having a spring assist such as this one. This one really pops the blade out with force, so use caution when deploying it. Need I say, don’t hold it close to the body because if the blade makes contact, IT WILL CUT YOU. THE TIP IS VERY SHARP! And no, I did not cut myself. I’m just making an observation for those that may not be familiar with this type of knife.
Great knife my newest favorite!!
Missing a screw
Only the best
Nice looking knife, fiddly safety opening feature. Virtually impossible for left hander to open it one handed. Fit and finish are marginal; the blade came from factory very sharp but my copy had a slight lateral blade wiggle. My experience with Chinese steel is that they are easy to put an extremely sharp edge but does not hold the edge very well. For same money, I think Kershaw and Spyderco offer better made Chinese sourced knives.
One of the Best knives I have ever purchased! I liked the black tactical blade that I originally bought so much, I went out and bought the silver version of it. Can’t say I have ever bought a duplicate model of anything before. But I did with this Fire Spark knife. You can play with this knife for hours at a time. It is on the heavier side for a folder but it let’s you know it has authority and commands respect. The outburst assist ability is like nothing you’ve seen before. It sits in your pocket very nicely; sits quietly ready and waiting to spring into action, when needed. A must have for any knife collection!
I carry this knife everywhere I go, it’s my bodyguard. The knife is very well made. The blade is very sharp, The assisted opening system of the knife is a little hard at the beginning. Once you use it every day, it gets easy. When the knife is in use, push forward the lock and the knife won’t close.
Really nice knife,i love it!!
Nice product with performance well beyond this price point.
Yes, this knife is a bit thick (which I like). I’m a fan of a little bit of weight. It feels steady, and durable in your palm. The ‘thunk’ it makes when you’re opening it is very satisfying (not a weeny little click like my previous knife, the ignitor)/ It’s a decent length, holds a good edge, and is a pretty good edc knife, although it’s probably the biggest knife I’d put in that category.
I’ve been carrying this knife now going on 3 years and it has never let me down. Pretty sharp with minimal work and the steel is 1095 so that’s a major plus. The pocket clip is not to tight but secures snugly and can be put in four different positions up or down carry on both sides. The outburst assisted opening is now second nature to me and is my favorite assisted opening mechanism for a fast open to grip and it’s solidness. The blade is also fairly large. It fits great in the hand, I have large hands but it coul accommodate larger or smaller. All around a great knife and my favorite everyday carry.
great EDC
I bought this because the reviews were very good and they all said that the lockup when opened is excellent. I found that the side to side on my knife was very loose. I tried to tighten the pivot screw but it would not tighten. I sent it back to CRKT and they replaced it with a new one, The new one had a poor pivot screw adjustment as well, however I was easily able to tighten the pivot screw on the replacement knife. It now has the best lockup of any knife I own and I love the blade and function of the outburst system. Great knife.
the assisted release takes a little technique to master but with that said it is an easy to use with only one hand. Well made, sturdy and just an all around great work knife.
No knife this difficult to open under stress can be called \\”tactical,\\” especially since no amount of practice guarantees performance.
.
However, in every other respect, it’s a heck of a knife. I didn’t want to give it up. So I tried a workaround to make it open more easily. I applied a few layers of mailing tape (the kind with the embedded fibers) to cover the thumb stud where it contacts the liner-lock. This pushes the liner-lock away from the blade and overrides the safety feature. It now opens easily by using the thumb stud in the more traditional manner. So easily, in fact, that if I drop the knife three feet onto a hard surface, it will fully deploy. It has so far not spontaneously deployed in my pocket nor while extracting it therefrom. (When did we start saying \\”deploy\\” to mean \\”open,\\” I wonder.) Speaking only for myself, I prefer a knife that reliably opens a bit too easily to one that may require multiple attempts when I’m in a hurry. What I’d really prefer is to be able to depress the thumb-stud, hear the safety click open, then use it as I would any other. Not sure if that’s even possible.
First, it came very sharp! Takes more than a little practice to open and close. Not exactly intuitive, but nothing you can’t get the hang of. Locks open and locks closed. Outstanding large carry pocket knife.
This knife had so much potential, it’s sad that there’s a few design flaws that make this potentially a 5-star knife 3 stars.
First, like another reviewer said it’s tricky to open. Kinda hurts unless you get the position of your hand and thumb just right. Not a good thing if you need to deploy quickly.
Second, the blade has some bothering give side-to-side. Tightening the screw helps, but it also makes it even harder to deploy and the give is still there.
Other than those two issues, it’s build quality is great. Very well constructed. No give on the blade up and down. The blade itself is quite sharp out of the box, although not the sharpest.
The clip can be removed or moved from any of the four sides/ends which is nice, but my cheap torx driver was too cheap to loosen the screws. Shouldn’t be a problem with an American made torx driver. (Mine was a cheap China made one.)
Still, I can’t get past the tricky deployment. So sad, would easily be a 5-star knife. Still one of my favorites though, even if my thumb hates me.
great response time. great quality. great size, fits my hand. It would be better if it were produced in the United States.
This knife is larger than I anticipated but love the fast opening and the manual Lawks, so it won’t accidently close. Great looking and fits in your hand nicely. CRKT is one of my favorite brands.
I have owned several CRKT knives and I love each one even more than the last. I am a big fan of the Fire Safe and Outburst Assist combo. I have this combo of features on my other EDC and think it is just the best assisted opening, always easy to use, always quick to open, and nearly no maintenence. With the Fire Safe feature, I have never had any issue with the blade springing open unwanted.
This particulare knife has a great large blade. It is thick and long and feels very sturdy. I would feel comfortable using it for lighter prying.
Until i got used to the assisted opening mechanism, it was a little difficult. It came out of the box VERY sharp. So far it seems to be a solid knife.
Big knife. Fits my hand well. Love the Outburst. Very well made, high quality knife by CRKT. I have several of their knives and I love everyone.
The CRKT Fire Spark is a very fine knife and performs just as I expected. Razor sharp right out of the box and fits my hand nicely, but it is a bit thicker than I expected. This is not a great \\”pocket knife\\” considering its large size, but is a good size to work with on a variety of tasks. The spring clip worked well on my carpenter jeans keeping the knife secure in the side pocket yet readily available while working. I was familiar with the assisted opening mechanism from a previous CRKT knife so I had no problem using it but a drop of oil did help free up the action. I used it for opening and splitting dozens of cardboard boxes recently and it held its edge very well and cleaned up easily after work. I highly recommend this knife.
Very sharp right out of the box. I had a sheath made for it. Assisted opener works great. I would highly recommend this knife for someone who needs a good solid folder. Clip is adjustable and comes with the knife.
The Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) Fire Spark 1050 is one of the best assisted opening knife designs ever produced. The Fire Safe lock securely prevents the blade from accidentally deploying while the LAWKS safety insures that the hefty liner lock cannot be dislodged under stress. Together, these two features make the Fire Spark one of the safest, yet quickest knives ever.
The blade is made of 8Cr14MoV stainless steel, a Chinese steel that is inexpensive but of mid-range quality. The Fire Spark 8Cr14MoV has been heat treated to RC 58-59 insuring good edge retention and has good durability. 8Cr14MoV is a step up from the more common 8Cr13MoV which is widely used because it is less expensive and somewhat easier to work. The almost four-inch blade came out of the box with a very sharp edge.
While the blade is good looking, it has only a small area to secure it in certain knife sharpeners. The blade locks securely without any play. The blade is perfectly centered in the closed knife.
The Outburst assisted opening mechanism is very strong and hurls the large blade out very energetically. Be sure to hold the knife securely when deploying the blade and keep far away from the arc made by the blade’s sharp tip.
The Fire Spark 1050 looks great, and feels good in the hand. It looks and feels like a much more expensive knife. While large, it doesn’t feel heavy in my pocket and my wife said the knife looked serious but \\”gentlemanly.\\”
The Fire Safe lock prevents the blade from accidentally deploying. I’ve made numerous attempts to firmly pull the blade out manually but couldn’t budge it. I’ve also mashed the Fire Safe lock as it might be depressed in my pocket, yet the blade has never fired. Fire Safe appears to be very effective at locking the blade in the closed position.
On the other hand, if you are accustomed to thumb-stud deployed assisted opening knives, unlocking the Fire Safe lock is virtually transparent and requires little to no extra training to use. In fact, an experienced knife handler might not even notice that the blade has a very robust safety holding it in place; the blade deploys naturally and deactivating the Fire Safe lock requires no extra time or attention.
The only problem with the Fire Safe lock is that left handed people will likely struggle with it. Although I have tried many times, I have been unable to deploy the blade with my left hand, but this might be possible with enough practice.
A few years ago with a different folding knife, the blade lock failed while I was cleaning a deer. This could have resulted in a serious injury if I hadn’t reacted quickly enough to halt the razor sharp Buck blade only about an inch above my fingers. Consequently, the CRKT Fire Spark LAWKS safety is very important to me. LAWKS securely blocks the very robust liner lock in place, making the Fire Spark nearly as strong and safe as a fixed blade knife. The Fire Spark is equipped with the manual LAWKS variation which require that you push a button forward to engage it. On other knives, CRKT also makes AutoLAWKS which works identically but deploys automatically. The two variations have their own pros and cons, and I am happy with either.
While the G10 inlays look nice, they are smooth and do not provide much traction. However, the deep finger groves in the handle combined with good jimping allow the knife to be held securely.
The stainless steel pocket clip is long and strong shows only about 1/2 inch of the knife above the pocket. The clip can be removed and repositioned in four different locations which is an unusual amount of flexibility.
In short, the CRKT Fire Spark is one of the most brilliantly conceived knife designs ever produced, which would normally warrant five stars, but there are typical \\”made in China\\” quality issues.
The head of the pivot screw on the Fire Spark Ireceived was stripped. This is a serious issue because knives often require pivot screw adjustments over time. I will be receiving a replacement knife from Amazon in a few days and will report about its condition.
A more minor issue is that the G10 inlays do not smoothly blend into the handles. There are also a few sharp corners and edges on different parts of the handle that should have been polished down. The Outburst spring is not centered perfectly, but this does not impair functionality.
With better materials and workmanship, the Fire Spark could become one of the best folding knives available, although costs would certainly rise. As it is now, the CRKT Fire Spark is an excellent knife for the money and probably the safest assisted opening knife ever produced. In fact, the Fire Spark is safer than the vast majority of manual knives. Probably, the only safer folding knives are Buck’s SafeSpin line of knives that includes its popular Redpoint.
UPDATE: I received the replacement knife and it has none of the flaws listed above. The Fire Safe lock was a initially a little hard to disengage, but a shot of lubricant instantly fixed that problem. Consequently, I’m bumping the Fire Spark rating up to five stars.
The CRKT Fire Spark is a great, great knife and I enthusiastically recommend it.
Great knife, great price! This knife far exceeded expectations. It was super sharp, well made, and has proven durable. I would buy another if I lost his one.
Received mine and it has poor quality control. The buffing along the blade was very uneven, to the point that in two areas it produced visible grooves (that don’t look good). The blade shape is neat, and openning fast and cool (sound).
Disappointed, I can’t live with the blemish on the blade, I returned it.
I USE my knives, they don’t just sit in a drawer or in a display case. I bought this to USE and it was fair from useful.
Pros:
-Fun to open
-Excellent blade length
-Comes shaving sharp
-Cool design
Cons:
-Cheesy grips
-Pretty poor build quality
-No index finger guard whatsoever! Finger easily slides onto blade
-Steel is chinese and doesn’t hold an edge for long
-Blade had A LOT of surface rust after two days of use. Simply using this knife outside and then washing it off will lead to surface rust.
Overall, if your looking for a knife to sit around and play with, this is the knife for you. If you actually use your knives, keep looking!
I’ll keep this review short and to the point. This is a large folder. Be prepared for a 3.8\\” blade or something like that. I didn’t consider the size of the knife when purchasing so I may be purchasing a smaller folder for an every day carry. This knife is just big enough to look rather threatening and dangerous so I would hesitate using this in a public place.
That being said, the knife is very very nice. As another reviewer noted, it came razor sharp (I could shave hair off my arm with it no problem). I can see how someone would have difficulty with the \\”fire safe\\” button system, but after some practice I figured out the movement and have no issues opening now. I like the way one must be aware of the specific motion to open the knife since it may prevent others from abusing it without my knowledge.
Great knife, I felt it deserved a quick review.
I really do like this knife, the form and functions are great. The moving parts are solid and the knife came razor sharp. The problem I have is that the one I received had a defective grip inlay. It was thinner than the metal surrounding it so it created an unsightly lip. It looks bad… makes the knife look cheap even. For some reason I can’t request an exchange so I am returning it for a refund and will buy another in hopes that I will get a good one.
I will update this review depending how my second one turns out. Hopefully for the better.
I have owned a number of pocket knives over the years, this is a large well-built pocket knife that is as good to look at as it is to use. The assisted opening works flawlessly but has never attempted to open in my pocket and it has duel locking mechanisms to assure it never closes before you want it to. Like other CRKT knives there is nothing flimsy about this knife, rock solid construction and a steel alloy that holds an edge.
I own a lot of knifes.I carry them until I get tierd of them or something else gets my attention. This one is a great tool its big its tough fast easy open one handed knife.I have no use for a small bladed complicated knife.I put a benchmade in the drawer to carry this one. Will snap heads when it opens.Knifes are like ladies evryone likes them for there own little quirkes.[[ASIN:B0033HBG00 Columbia River Knife And Tool’s Fire Spark 1050 Assisted Opening Razor Edge Knife]]
I’m a knife collector and I have many knives and many brands, CRKT is one of my favorites, and this one is no exception, but I do have one caveat: It is REALLY tricky to open. I understand the reasoning behind the opening system, it’s designed not to deploy accidentally, and believe me it won’t. In fact, I find it kind of hard to deploy on purpose. The thumb stud mechanism is really stiff, and you MUST use the perfect motion EACH and EVERY time you open the knife, anything less than perfect will result in the blade being only partially deployed, and there is some risk of the blade cutting the thumb you used to try it. I tried some lubricating oil, and that has helped, I hope it will continue to \\”break in\\”, but until then, I will be very careful when opening this knife. It’s well made, the fit and finish is great, the design and materials are nice, but just be careful when opening until you get it right. The phrase \\”you gotta hold your mouth right\\” has never been more pertinent.
quality for a low price. heavy duty. the OutBurst assisted opening is impressive. it snaps out and locks in a blur. sounds solid. there are some good video reviews on You Tube. the Fire Safe button takes a little practice. just sweep your thumb down and out at a 45 degree angle. the four finger choils feel natural in my big hand. nice gimping. four way clip. a little large for my every day, but I wouldn’t change anything.
This knife is great! I carry it every day. It took a little time to get used to opening it, push down more then out. Very nice.
Very high quality knife, solid and sharp blade with a strong penetrating point, great ergonomics, good opening mechanism, useful locking mechanism. Ordered with \\”Super Saver 5-8 day free shipping\\” and it arrived on the third day. Excellent service. Very impressed with the product but don’t expect to open it left handed. For left handers remove the thumbstud with a torx driver and reverse position. Don’t be disturbed by the way the \\”Fire Safe\\” button rattles when the blade is deployed – the thumb naturally rests on the backspine preventing it from rattling. 9.7 / 10
I have quite an extensive collection of knives, but this one has to be my favorite. The size is perfect, the build quality is excellent and it looks sleek, mean and elegant all at the same time without being overly heavy or bulky. The Fire Safe feature is a little tricky and the Outburst assisted opening is fast and positive. The linerlock operates very well, plus it has the option of the Lawks feature. Oh yeah, it’s sharp too. Very highly recommended!
