Houston Independent School District will not hold classes on Monday, November 28 due to an ongoing boil water notice issued by the City of Houston on Sunday night. The district addressed the city’s boil alert Sunday evening, stating that the notice will compel it to shutter classrooms and buildings for the first day of the coming school week.

“Due to the Boil Water Notice issued by the City of Houston late this evening, all Houston ISD schools, offices, and facilities will be closed Monday, Nov. 28, 2022,” the district tweeted Sunday night. “#HISD will closely monitor the situation and provide additional updates regarding operations tomorrow.”

The district will also postpone a redistricting hearing slated for Monday night at Westside High School. The boil water notice follows a late-morning power outage at Houston’s East Water Purification Plant near Galena Park and the Buffalo Bayou on Sunday, which caused water pressure to drop below state safety standard requirements. Residents are advised to not drink water, shower or use tap water for brushing their teeth without boiling it first and allowing it to cool.

“A boil water notice has been issued for the City of Houston's Main Water System,” the City of Houston’s Twitter account posted at 7:27 p.m. CT. “Earlier today, the water pressure dropped below the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's required minimum of 20 PSI during a power outage at the East Water Purification Plant on Sunday, November 27, at 10:30 am.”

HISD’s closure will likely be followed by restaurant closures on Monday as venues adjust to the boil water notice , which is expected to last until at least early Tuesday , according to a report from KHOU. Those who do not have the ability to boil water are asked to use bottled water until the notice is lifted.

Houston has seen a number of boil water notices in the last two years, including a boil advisory during 2021’s Winter Storm Uri and an order following a water main break in early 2020.
