England centre-back Harry Maguire is believed to have blurred vision after he was substituted during Monday’s handsome 6-2 victory over Iran. The struggling Manchester United star put in a solid performance to silence many of his critics as the Three Lions got their World Cup campaign off to a sensational start.

Gareth Southgate has regularly defended Maguire in the media amid fierce criticism for his performances at club level. The vote of confidence from the England boss extended to the first game of the tournament as he was selected to start alongside John Stones at centre-back.
Things started extremely well for England, who made it to the semi-finals four years ago in Russia. Goals from Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling put them two goals up at the break, and the floodgates stayed open in the second half with further strikes from Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.
Mehdi Taremi bagged a brace for Iran, including a penalty 13 minutes into second-half stoppage time, but they proved to be consolations for Carlos Queiroz’s side. Following Taremi’s first goal, Maguire slumped to the turf with what appeared to be a concussion and he was substituted with 20 minutes to play.

“He just said to enjoy the wins because it would have been a very different reaction had we not have got the result but we’ve got to get ready for the next game and realise that a new challenge is incoming.
“Wins take the pressure off, when you win games, you’re at ease for a little bit longer. We know there’s a bit more off for the two games but we will still be at the same level, trying to perform and get two more wins because that’s how we want to be, that’s how we want to carry our mentality hopefully through the rest of the tournament.”
After the final whistle, BBC presenter and former England hero Gary Lineker explained: “Harry Maguire has blurred vision, but is all alright otherwise. That’s the news that is coming out of the England dressing room.”
It remains to be seen whether that will affect Southgate’s plans for the remainder of England’s Group B campaign. Comparatively trickier ties lie on the horizon, starting with the USA on Friday before a bumper clash with Wales on November 29.

Bellingham is heavily linked with a move to the Premier League next summer amid a spell of superb form with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund.
