In regard to that recent court ruling that Larry Elder and other gubernatorial candidates cannot be required to submit recent tax returns. It raises the question: Isn't a person's character and integrity relevant to their qualification to be governor?
Whether a person cheats on taxes or not seems a good indication of their character and integrity. If they do not cheat, don't they want to prove it by disclosing their tax returns? And if they fight to hide their tax returns, doesn't that put at least a little doubt on their integrity?
And that raises the further question: Why do we stick with a tax system that promotes cheating as part of the status quo?
We could eliminate this part of our culture by just taxing everyone at the same rate. No excuses, no deductions, no loopholes for corporations or individuals.

Don't give home to boss
By embracing work-from-home, we are unwittingly trading away the sanctity of our homes for perceived "flexibility." Work-from-home existed before the pandemic, but its current version was born of a crisis. Despite the cute failed batches of sourdough, working from our homes during COVID-19 represents employee survival, not employer generosity.
We weren't "exercising a benefit," we were just trying to keep our jobs by doing them at home.
I wouldn't tolerate an unwelcome guest for months on end. Why should I accept my employer setting up shop at my kitchen table for over a year?
A Chronicle letter suggests employers should pay for commute time. The implication is that by incentivizing employers to allow work-from-home, workers will be better off. I don't agree. My home is sacred, and employers should pay a premium to be at my dinner table. My employer is effectively a squatter, consuming my bandwidth and air conditioning while lowering its own overhead costs.
We've done this before — traded away deeply private space for what seems to be a convenient novelty — only to realize we've sold ourselves. This time, we're unwittingly giving away the final frontier, our homes.

Vaccines not for all
A recent vaccinated letter writer complained about being asked to mask up to protect the unvaccinated whom he disparaged. I am discouraged by those who refuse to be vaccinated, but many unvaccinated are not eligible due to young age and some have health conditions that render vaccinations ineffective or inadvisable. Wearing a mask indoors is a small price to pay to protect them and, as a good side effect, to not catch a cold or other respiratory illness.

It's too late, baby
Regarding "S.F. sets aggressive new goals for reducing climate impact" (Bay Area, July 22): I hate to be Mr. Doom and Gloom, but I fear it is too late to reverse climate change. There has been too much talk at the city and national levels, but not enough action. The best we can do now is slow climate change down and prepare to deal with its effects.

Clearly the GOP, with its war on voting rights, anti-vax and anti-science attitudes, and captivation with crazy QAnon conspiracies, needs rebranding. I have a modest suggestion here: the Fascist Anti-American Totalitarian Completely Amoral Trump Sycophants — or FATCATS for short.
Come to think of it, that's pretty much what the GOP has always been.
