EASTERN PASSAGE, N.S. – Nova Scotia's police watchdog says no charges are warranted against an officer who shot and killed a 60-year-old man last year. Police say they responded to a call last July about a man uttering threats and armed with what was thought to be a loaded pistol outside a home in the Halifax-area community of Eastern Passage. A report by the province's Serious Incident Response Team says the man's 85-year-old mother called police when the suspect approached the home they shared and aimed a weapon at her. The watchdog says officers who arrived at the scene asked the man to lower his gun and put his hands in the air, but the man did not comply and aimed the weapon at police. One of the officers shot the man four times and the suspect died at the scene. It was later discovered man's weapon was an unloaded air gun. The report says the officer was justified in using lethal force against the man because the officer believed the suspect presented an immediate risk.
