San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo apologized Tuesday for attending an in-person gathering that brought together eight people from five households of his extended family on Thanksgiving. In a statement, Liccardo said he regretted gathering in defiance of state rules, and apparently his own advice to the public on the issue. The state currently permits only three households to gather together outdoors. “I understand my obligation as a public official to provide exemplary compliance with the public health orders, and certainly not to ignore them,” he said in a statement. “I commit to do better.” Just a few days earlier, on Nov. 25, Liccardo tweeted “Cases are spiking, in part because we’re letting our guard (and masks) down with family & friends. Let’s cancel the big gatherings this year and focus on keeping each other safe.” Liccardo is not the only politician to come under fire for what critics have characterized as a hypocritical disregard for state regulations on in-person gatherings.
