An E-bike rider fatally crashed into a woman before fleeing the scene because he was ‘confused and just wanted to go home’, a court heard today. Bricklayer Thomas Hanlon, 32, allegedly ploughed into Sakine Cihan, 56, at 10mph above the 20mph speed limit as she crossed Kingsland Road, Dalston, east London in August 2018. Mrs Cihan collapsed bleeding and had suffered multiple fractured ribs in the collision. She died in hospital the next day as a result of a ‘catastrophic’ head injury, in what is believed to be the first death of a pedestrian after a collision with an e-bike in the UK. Hanlon was driving a vehicle which ‘appeared to be a bicycle’ but had, it is alleged, been fitted with a highly-powered battery motor capable of travelling at double the legal speed limit for E-bikes. Although Hanlon’s bike used a battery rather than an engine, the court heard it is classed as a motorcycle rather than an electrically-assisted pedal cycle because it could travel more than the legal 15.5mph limit.
