The metro Oklahoma City Sikh faith community recently held its annual Baisakhi Mela on the grounds of the Sikh Gurdwara of Oklahoma, 4529 NW 16.The free spring fair included booths featuring free food and snacks; turban tying demonstrations; and menhdi, a form of body art using henna. The community event also include music and dancing of traditional Bhangra and Gidha dances.Baisakhi marks the creation of the Khalsa, a community or order of devout, orthodox Sikh soldiers. The 10th guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the order in 1699. Baisakhi is known by several other names in various regions of India. It is commonly celebrated as a spring harvest festival.
