Following the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, White House senior adviser Stephen Miller is pressing President Donald Trump to also dismiss other senior officials there, CNN reported on Monday.
Administration officials said that Miller seeks the firing of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services director Lee Cissna and the department’s general counsel John Mitnick.
Trump reportedly told aides recently in an Oval Office meeting that Miller was in charge of all issues related to immigration and the border in the White House, which was first reported by The Washington Post and means that Miller has the ability to call and chair meetings on immigration issues.
The personnel changeover comes following a surge of migrant apprehensions at the border with Mexico in recent months.
Trump has been pressing in recent weeks to reinstate the family separation policy, which Nielsen resisted, a source said. Trump did away with that policy last summer following public outrage.
A DHS official told CNN that there was “some exasperation” following Nielsen’s ouster, saying, “we are losing leadership faster than we can get it confirmed or even hired permanently.”
