Led by a trio of local players, the Le Moyne women’s basketball team won its first-ever NCAA Division II regional playoff game with a 55-43 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday in Philadelphia, PA. The Dolphins (25-5) advance to face tournament host University of the Sciences, 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in a semifinal contest. Box score | Brackets MaKayla Roberts, from Cicero-North Syracuse, is one of three starters from Section III, along with Liz Millea, from Cooperstown and Jenna Zimmerman, from South Jefferson. Roberts, a junior, led Le Moyne in scoring with 15 points, 13 coming in the first half. She holds several Dolphins school records and added another, most three-points baskets, when she nailed a three pointer in the second quarter. Roberts now has 85 3-point baskets for the year and a record 203 for her career. She was averaging 17.3 points per game coming into the playoff game. Zimmerman scored a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The 6′2 freshman also had three key blocks in the contest. Millea also hit double figures with 10 points, all in the second half and eight coming in the third quarter that helped to shut down a St. Thomas Aquinas scoring run. Corinne Poitevien, a graduate student from Bardonia, NY, scored nine points, including a key basket down the stretch and grabbed 14 rebounds in the win.
