Soon after crossing the finish line of the 2017 New York City Marathon, Allie Kieffer found herself sitting on a stage with a microphone in front of the media. She was right next to Mary Keitany (the world record holder in the women’s-only marathon), answering questions about her 26-minute personal best performance that landed her in fifth-place, second American, at the world’s largest marathon. But when she moved from Boulder, Colorado, to New York to work as a nanny, she was in search of friends, Kieffer started running again to widen her social circle.
