Students rooting for Pleasure Ridge Park High at Friday’s playoff football game at St. Xavier won’t be wearing their school’s red and black colors.
Instead, the school is encouraging its cheering section to have a “pink out” in honor of teacher Amanda Williams, who unexpectedly died earlier this week from complications while giving birth to twin girls.
Williams, 33, had taught in Jefferson County Public Schools since 2008, and was herself a 2002 graduate of Pleasure Ridge Park High. She coached volleyball and cheerleading at the school and often helped organize homecoming activities and other school functions.
The school is also planning to have a collection box for donations for Williams’ family at the football game.
The death of the popular teacher shook the school community; crisis team members from the district were on hand at the school earlier this week to help students and staff cope.
Principal Kim Salyer said Thursday that students had been leaving flowers and notes at the door to Williams’ classroom.
Williams’ husband, Tommy Williams, is the school’s first-year head coach. She is survived by another daughter in addition to her twin girls.
The football game begins at 7:30 p.m. at St. X, 1609 Poplar Level Road.
